NANNA JO JOHNSON (F): 65 years old fervent Christian evangelical. Matriarch of her family. Morally rigid and judgmental, she is a persuasive force of nature who has moments of deep compassion and forgiveness. Terrified of the modern world. West Texas accent.
JIMMY JOHNSON (M): Late 30s. An educated good old boy, was a star football player in high school who is currently a small-town hotshot prosecutor who escaped his hometown for the big city of Hobbs, New Mexico. A big fish in a small pond who is ambitious and arrogant with a deep simmering rage percolating beneath the surface though humbled at times by the events of the play. West Texas accent.
JENNIFER JOHNSON (F): Late 30s. Divorced, Direct, snarky, cynical West Texas oil executive who uses humor to hide her conflict with her mother Nanna Jo. She is anti-government libertarian with socially liberal views, fiercely independent in her thinking and in her lifestyle; she finds the sheepish views of those around her idiotic and embarrassing. Not particularly kind but increasingly introspective with age. Cosmopolitan compared to her surroundings. Lives in Lubbock, Texas. West Texas accent.
TYLER JOHNSON (M) 15-16 year old boy (also looking for older actors who looks the age) Non speaking role--in a coma throughout the play. He is the catalyst of the piece. Tyler does not fit into the West Texas community where he lives. Gentle and artistic and has a close relationship with his mother and grand mother. In deep conflict with his father.
KENNY (M) mid 30s, music teacher, openly gay, has returned to his boyhood town to visit his dying mother, a great capacity to forgive the people who tormented and injured him as a boy. West Texas accent.
SUZANNE (F) 32, gave birth to her son Tyler when she was 16, raw intelligence not formally educated. She is an unpolished diamond who speaks her mind, spiritual but does not practice organized religion. In an oppressive marriage, drinks too much and is committed to her children. West Texas accent.
